Check out this neat centaur statue I found at the corner of Rue de Sèvres and Rue du Cherche Midi, in the 6th arrondissement.
A little internet research tells me this sculpture was created in 1985 by French sculptor
César Baldaccini (often referred to as simply
César), who happens to be the same guy who did the
huge thumb (aka
Le Pouce) at La Défense.
But can you explain why it has all that stuff coming out of its butt? A broom? A rake? Is that just standard centaur stuff. I lived down the block for 7 years and couldn't figure it out.
ReplyDeleteBaldaccini is buried in the Montparnasse cemetery, quite near Serge Gainsbourg and Samuel Beckett, and his headstone is a miniature version of the centaur sculpture ..
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I've visited Gainsbourg and Beckett but never noticed the centaur! I will definitely look for it next time. Thanks!
